SPAM E-Mail

SPAM, simply put is unsolicited e-mail. Your e-mail address is just one of millions that are collected and then put into mailing lists that are either sold or made available to anyone on the internet.

In Box MS Outlook filled with SPAM

Does your In Box look similiar to this?

The problem is that your e-mail address gets replicated to hundreds of mailing lists and continuously propagates to other mailing lists. Other times your e-mail address is recorded when you either just use your e-mail or your computer is invaded by reporting Spyware. Or when you visit a web site and use your e-mail address when filling out an online form.

Getting rid of spam is a challenge. Sometimes it is easier to change your e-mail address with a new one and decommission the old. This may not be acceptable in some situations. A spam filter may be necessary. There are different types of filters, some are software based and some are hardware based.

SPAM is very costly because if you receive 50, 100 or more pieces of SPAM mail a day, you need to delete the mail just to find the legitimate mail you need to get. This takes time and is very annoying. Not to mention if you add up the time you spend deleting the mail it amounts to countless hours per year. Now multiply this across your network if you have more than 2 users on your network. Here is a quote from the August 2003 article from the Wall Street Journal describing this:

"Spam accounts for 45% of all e-mails, or 15 billion messages every day, and costs business world-wide a total of $20 billion a year in lost productivity and technology expenses, according to the Radicati Group, a market research firm in Palo Alto, CA. The firm predicts the number of daily spams will rise to more than 50 billion by 2007, and costs will reach almost $200 billion per year."
