Lock Ups
Lock ups occur on computers for many reasons. Program malfunctions, viruses, hardware problems and compounding installations of programs. But the most common lock up problem or extreme slowness in your PC is usually caused by multiple background applications that launch during startup. Please look at the “System Tray” in the lower right hand corner of the graphic below. Notice the high amount of icons in this example. Does this look familiar? These programs that are loaded have a profound impact on computer performance. This part of your Windows operating system needs to be kept in check. |
| How do you deal with these programs?
Some of these programs can be removed through the traditional Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. Other means are the registry*, MSCONFIG** Utility or third party programs. But be careful not to eliminate the necessary programs that run in startup such as CD-RW drivers. If you are experiencing performance issues in your business, maybe it is time to call a professional. What was mentioned here may also indicate a much deeper problem with your computer. What to Do Next? [CLICK HERE] |
*The registry editor should only be used when instructed by a support professional. Making changes to the Windows registry can disable the computer all together if care is not taken. **The MSCONFIG utility is standard with Window 98, Windows ME, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. MSCONFIG can be installed on Windows 95, 2000 and NT via the Windows Resource Kit. And as with the registry, care should be taken here as well. Disabling the startup items will prevent programs like virus scans and other critical programs from starting up. |
